Screen recording platform rewrites
Haris Muhibić was tech lead for three v2 rewrites of a screenshot and screen-recording SaaS (desktop app, web dashboard and browser extension), and moved its video encoding onto serverless GPUs.
- Role
- Tech lead and release owner
- When
- 2022 – 2026
- Stack
Desktop app (Electron)
I was the release owner from the first build through version 1.8.
- Releases: auto-update with beta channels, Windows code signing and macOS notarisation.
- Native modules: packaged for both x64 and arm64.
- Recording: macOS screen recording through native capture, a rewritten Windows recorder, cursor and click highlighting from global input hooks, and Do Not Disturb while recording.
- Server-side processing: cropping and GIF and MP4 conversion moved off the user’s machine.
Web dashboard (Next.js)
I started the rewrite and set its architecture: layout, authentication handed over from the old app, drop privacy and self-destruct, team branding, search, folders and billing add-ons. It reached production through an opt-in beta flag while the old dashboard kept running.
Browser extension (Manifest V3)
Recording with pause and resume, camera overlay, injected controls and full-page “scrolling” screenshots that handle the nested scroll containers of React apps. Permissions were trimmed to pass Chrome Web Store review.
Media pipeline
- Then: ffmpeg on Lambda, with palette-optimised GIFs and progress reported back to the desktop app.
- Now: encoding on serverless NVIDIA GPUs, with a circuit breaker, a CPU fallback, a watchdog for hung processes and output checks before publishing.
Open source
A maintained fork of a global keyboard and mouse hook that still builds on modern Electron, despite V8 API removals and ABI changes.
